I Love it so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The first book on Hitchcock, which is not a film book, but a book about style, decoration and fashion! The motel in Psycho. The bachelor pad in Rear Window. The blonde elegance of Tippi Hedren and Grace Kelly. 'Hitchcock style' is immediately identifiable and universally recognized. Thatâ€™s because Alfred Hitchcockâ€™s images, which have informed fashion, photography, and art as well as film, arise as much from a particularly vivid aesthetic as from the suspenseful subject matter.

Really rubbish. Some of the most specious intellectualizing ever written about Hitchcock's work, full of crack-pot theories. The photographs are ill-chosen and not particularly representative. This is neither a book about style nor a book about substance. It is confused and error-ridden. One small example, from page 30: "In that spring of 1979, his jubilee was being celebrated, but he could barely move. (Â¶) But he had finally won some friends. Grace Kelly - Princess Grace- was dead and Tippi Hedren (of The Birds) had fled film in disgust." In fact, Hitch died the next year in April 1980 and Grace died over two years later, in September 1982. For a Reader seeking a critical analysis of Hitchcock's films, this is meagre. For a Reader seeking the elements of Hitchcock's style, this is empty.

I bought this book despite a couple of bad reviews. I wholeheartedly agree that the writing/translation is not very good. In addition to factual errors, there are sentence structure problems and schizophrenic writing. I am glad I bought the book because there is enough here (photos mainly) for it to be useful to me for my purposes, but this is not a book for the casual or very unintentional. This could have been an amazing book because I think this is a very good conceptual approach to Hitchcock's work. I cannot recommend this book for everyone.

If you thought this was going to be 'a critical review' of Hitchcock's oeuvre, then you probably have written a number of one star reviews for Amazon. The jacket cover gives a clear indication of what this picture book offers (in case you're unaware of the catalog of luxury style publisher Assouline). Although this book is properly a four star, I'm cocking my snoot at the reviewers who claim they believed this would be a critical exegesis of the direcotrâ€™s work. It's to be recommended for its breezy fun, anecdotal stories, and photos of the timeless stars and fashions in Hitch's films, including some sassy juxtapositions (the Magritte on p134 opposite the Tippi Hedren stand-in on p135). A handy Filmography is placed at the end (but if you're working on a terminal masters thesis, I wouldn't rely on its accuracy).Beautifully produced, as is typical for Assouline, printed on heavy coated stock by Grafiche in Milan, and bound in signatures, this is a volume intended to last -- albeit as a smaller format coffee table book. If you can afford, buy it for what is is -- not for what you want it to be. It's heavyweight lightweight.

I wholeheartedly agree with the previous review! The book is LOADED with glaring errors! 3 that come to mind: North By Northwest's famous cropdusting scene was set in Illinois, not Texas, which he mentions more than once. Grace Kelly did not die in 1979 and there is a great picture, elsewhere, of GK and "Hitch" at the function this author uses for a reference point of Hitch's dead friends and sad end of life, and he refers to Patricia Collinge as Joseph Cottens mother in "Shadow Of A Doubt": She was his loving sister. He also misquotes Psycho and several of the biggest films in AH career. Didnt this guy have a fact checker to help him? He is also very coarse in his descriptions of people in Hitchcocks life: Anthony Perkins looked like a retarded child? I only gave it 3 stars for the rare pics that are included. Buy it when its in the remainder bin or used on Ebay!
